It was a nice, shallow grade walking to the hut, with the exception of a big landslip (from 1999, I think), which required a lot of steep clambering up, over and down the hill to get around. We were at the hut within three hours (and would have been much sooner if we hadn’t been so leisurely), after which a smaller group of us went for a wander around the tops, which still had some scattered snow. We spent Saturday afternoon on a daywalk around Mangahuia, including lots of sliding around the snow on pack liners.

The sweatiest part of the trip was carrying my pack home from Wellington Railway Station, and generally it was heaps of fun.
