Floyd Pond: A New Tararua Lake

There’s an interesting report on Stuff this evening about a landslide in the upper Tauherenikau catchment of the Tararua, which has created a new lake in the catchment surrounded by the Dress Circle and Alpha. The new lake was reported by Floyd, Joe Nawalaniec, Franz Hubmann and Paul McCredie, so kudos to them.

There’s a suggestion that the landslide might have been caused by the mag 7.8 earthquake in November, although as yet this is unconfirmed. The same earthquake created many new lakes in the south island, but this would be the first reported in the north.

Its stated location is lat -40.968234, long 175.296307 lat -40.969645 long 175.295829, which converts to a grid ref of around 5462230 5462074 (northing) and 1793222 1793179 (easting) when expressed in NZTM. With Topo50 maps that translates to BP33 932 621 (on BP33 Featherston).

The group is informally naming it Floyd Pond, after the dog. It’ll most likely now become a new destination for some of the more adventurous and skilled visitors to the range.

Paul McCredie has a video of another recent trip of his into the Hell’s Gate headwaters of the Tauherenikau to give you an idea of the terrain.

Thanks. I’ll check it out when I get home in a few days.

Paul is now producing a Vimeo of this trip too. We had lunch at the spot where he popped out into the river on his last trip.
Floyd Pond is 100-150m upstream of where you’ve placed it on your map.

      Awesome. Thanks for that, Joe.

Here is the Vimeo ref for anyone who’s searching:

Oh, also I just translated the lat/long that was published in the Stuff article, but didn’t audit my conversion too closely. Did you mean up the main stream towards Alpha Hut, or further up that side creek towards the Beehives?

Well the slip / lake location was a guesstimate placed over the phone with a news reporter who hasn’t tramped and wasn’t sure how to read a topo map, so that’s how the media’s red dot on the map arose.
I would shift it perhaps ~200m upstream from where you have it, on the main river branch, ie 100m above the confluence of that side creek.
The downstream toe of the slip looks to have partially buried the bottom of that side creek as well, as well as the main river valley

Thanks. I’ve had a go at fixing it. Does it look better?

If so, I’ll see what I can do about also correcting the grid reference mentioned above, once I have a spare moment.

Floyd the spoodle and I headed back in to check on “his” eponymous lake, “Floyd Pond”, in the head of the Tauherenikau River.
Three years after its formation during the Kaikoura earthquake, it’s still there, stable, and doing rather well.
Coming into the summer tramping season, it would be a 2hr tramp down from Alpha Hut, into a magical, beautiful, little-visited spot, or a longer round-trip tramp descending the stream due E of False Spur. (another route is upstream from Cone Hut, with a couple of swims)
Very worthwhile, and a recommended side-trip.
