    Dates: 23rd – 25th March, 2007
    Location: Rimutaka Forest Park
Huts visited: Paua Hut (2 nights), Baine Iti Hut (0 nights), and a whole lot of private batches that don’t count.

This was a weekend Easy-Medium club trip into the Rimutakas, roughly east of Wellington. After driving to the Catchpool Valley road-end in a couple of cars, we walked for a couple of hours in the dark towards Paua Hut, with some interesting crossings around the braided (and very shallow) Orongorongo River towards the end. Having reached the hut, we sat around for a little while, and went to bed.

We arrived quite late on Friday night, for a 10 minute walk into Sentry Box Hut, where there were already a couple of people. There was limited space, so Craig and Sam went outside under Craig’s tent fly, whilst everyone else found space indoors. (I think there were about three people on the floor.)

  • Trip: North Egmont Overnight

For the record, here are some more details of my overnight trip around North Egmont, during which I managed to make my knee injury a bit worse. Spending christmas with Stacey’s family in Taranaki was a perfect excuse to go for a wander around Egmont National Park.

    Location: Egmont National Park
Huts visited: Pouakai Hut (0 nights), Holly Hut (1 night), Maketawa Hut (0 nights).

This was a WTMC easy-medium-rated trip. We were originally supposed to get to Top Gorge hut (via Longview), but the weather caved in too much for us to easily get to Top Gorge. Instead, we stayed overnight at Longview and went for a series of walks.

We stayed the night at Parawai Lodge, which is a basic 18 bunk hut just over the swing bridge at Otaki Forks. The DOC information says it takes 4 hours to get to Waitewaewae, but this figure seems to be very misleading. (It’s probably for people who are quite fit and don’t stop for lunch.) It took us about 7 hours give or take a little.
