I think I probably ate something bad for lunch on the Friday that we left. All of that afternoon I had a headache, and this became a bit more of an issue when I got sick at 10.30pm Friday night after setting up my tent fly in the campground 200 metres from the Tamaki West road-end. Fortunately for me, though, I began to feel quite a lot better after that.

  • Trip: Blue Range, Mitre Flats, Bruce Hill

Well since the last post, my knee has completely healed and I’ve completed six weekend trips. My boots have been damaged twice (I think it’s a design flaw), and I’ve had one serious fall that ended in a 10 to 15 metre slide, and was quite lucky to avoid serious injury. I thought it’d be worth writing down some details about trips, just so there’s a record. I might expand on some of the other things later if I have time. Meanwhile I’m leaving for Chile in a couple of weeks, so I won’t have any more (New Zealand) trips for at least a few months.

    Dates: 20th – 22nd April, 2007
    Location: Tararua Forest Park
Huts visited: Blue Range Hut (0 nights), Mitre Flats Hut (1 night)

This weekend’s trip was in the Tararuas.

  • Trip: Pinnacles, Washpool

This trip was my first opportunity to try my brand new Huntech 2-man bivvy. I’d bought it with the following weekend’s trip in mind, but this was a good opportunity to test it all the same.

    Dates: 30th March – 1st April, 2007
    Location: Aorangi Forest Park
Huts visited: Washpool Hut (0 nights), Pararaki Hut (1 night camping), Kawakawa Hut (0 nights), Mangatoetoe Hut (0 nights).

  • Trip: Paua Hut, Turere Stream

    Dates: 23rd – 25th March, 2007
    Location: Rimutaka Forest Park
Huts visited: Paua Hut (2 nights), Baine Iti Hut (0 nights), and a whole lot of private batches that don’t count.

This was a weekend Easy-Medium club trip into the Rimutakas, roughly east of Wellington. After driving to the Catchpool Valley road-end in a couple of cars, we walked for a couple of hours in the dark towards Paua Hut, with some interesting crossings around the braided (and very shallow) Orongorongo River towards the end. Having reached the hut, we sat around for a little while, and went to bed.

  • Trip: Parks Peak / Upper Makaroro

    Dates: 2nd – 4th March, 2007
    Location: Ruahine Forest Park
Huts visited: Sentry Box Hut (1 night), Parks Peak Hut (0 nights), Upper Makaroro Hut (1 night).
Huts seen: Kylie Biv (from the opposite ridge).

We arrived quite late on Friday night, for a 10 minute walk into Sentry Box Hut, where there were already a couple of people. There was limited space, so Craig and Sam went outside under Craig’s tent fly, whilst everyone else found space indoors. (I think there were about three people on the floor.)

  • Trip: Jumbo / Holdsworth Loop

Who would have thought that a mountain range named after a brand of spreadable butter could be so pointy?

Huts visited: Holdsworth Lodge (1 night), Atiwhakatu Hut (0 nights), Jumbo Hut (1 night), Powell Hut (0 nights), Mountain House Shelter (0 nights).

  • Trip: Longview / Awatere Huts

    Dates: 17th – 19th November, 2006
    Location: Ruahine Forest Park
Huts visited: Longview Hut (1 night), Awatere Hut (0 nights)

This was a WTMC easy-medium-rated trip. We were originally supposed to get to Top Gorge hut (via Longview), but the weather caved in too much for us to easily get to Top Gorge. Instead, we stayed overnight at Longview and went for a series of walks.

  • Trip: Waitewaewae Hut

    Waitewaewae Hut
    Waitewaewae Hut.

    Dates: 9th – 11th September, 2006
    Location: Tararua Forest Park
Huts visited: Parawai Lodge (1 night), Waitewaewae Hut (1 night)

This was a WTMC easy-rated trip to Waitewaewae Hut in the Tararua ranges, from Sep 9th to 11th 2006, but most people agreed that it would have been better rated Easy-Medium.

We stayed the night at Parawai Lodge, which is a basic 18 bunk hut just over the swing bridge at Otaki Forks. The DOC information says it takes 4 hours to get to Waitewaewae, but this figure seems to be very misleading. (It’s probably for people who are quite fit and don’t stop for lunch.) It took us about 7 hours give or take a little.
